Ageing Process and Effects
For many people the younger they look the better they feel about themselves. However, ageing is an unstoppable process and as we age so does our skin. As a result, whether we like it or not, ageing shows in our faces and other areas of ones body. Some people age at a slower rate than others and this may be down to genetic factors. Environmental factors such as smoking and sun exposure play a key role.
Time Line of Ageing

Facial ageing is characterised by the development of lines. These can be divided into 2 categories.
- Dynamic Lines. These are due to muscle hyperactivity over many years. Repeated use of these muscles of facial expression results in permanent, dynamic lines and furrows. These are prominent in the upper face and are seen in the glabellar (between the eye brows), frown lines and crows feet. Their appearance is significantly reduced by Botox® treatment.
- Static Lines. These are due to volume loss. Hyaluronic Acid helps hydrate and add volume to the skin. The levels of this decrease with age. Collagen depletion also occurs resulting in skin becoming thinner, less elastic and flexible. The appearance of these static lines can be significantly reduced using fillers like Juvéderm ULTRA and Restylane.
Elsewhere on the body the ageing process relating to volume loss can be seen on the back of the hands, neck and décolletage.
The overall effects of ageing can cause people to feel less positive about themselves. Treating the main components of ageing can create a natural, balanced and refined appearance increasing self confidence and well being.
